I can explain, officer

An Irish* priest is driving down to Hamilton and gets stopped for speeding.

The traffic cop smells alcohol on the priest's breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car.

He says, "Sir, have you been drinking?"

"Just water," says the priest."

The officer says, "Then why do I smell wine?"

The priest looks at the bottle and says, "Good Lord! He's done it again!"

*This is the way the joke was related to me. Whilst it plays to the stereotype, maybe it was simply because these kind of jokes always circulate around St Patrick's day?
